Native Nursery Opening Autumn 2025

Biologically-primed, native plants designed to help farmers, gardeners and land owners who may experience a lack of profit or yield by reducing inputs while improving soil health through increased diversity above and below ground;

creating healthy farm ecosystems.

The mission of our Native Plant Nursery is to grow and provide our community with healthy, beneficial native plants of Northwest New Jersey while creating a model greenhouse and nursery operation that uses minimal inputs and incorporates regenerative practices.

Our vision is to build a truly regenerative greenhouse and nursery business—growing plants with organic methods, without peat moss or plastic. Our plants will be grown using regenerative practices such as bio-priming seeds and incorporating soil biology and amendments that ensure success in their permanent planting sites while inoculating planting projects with beneficial soil life.

We are peat-free and plan to be plastic-free by or before 2027. We want to be part of the solution and dream of locally sourced, sustainable fiber pots—or even pressing our own fiber in a custom-made machine, powered by biodiesel, right at our nursery site. Our plan for the production greenhouse is a passive solar greenhouse with heat sinks, supported by solar-powered environmental controls.

Demonstration Gardens & Nursery Selections

A series of native plant collections will be planted throughout Blue Herons Farm & Native Nursery. Each will be designed for a specific function—whether to attract pollinators, support species-specific butterflies, or serve as regenerative farm solutions like erosion buffers or natural pest management plantings.

Collections will be categorized by their purpose, such as shade or sun meadow gardens. Others will focus on practical regenerative farm solutions such as erosion buffers or planting for pest management.

These beautifully functional demonstration gardens will also provide a native seed bank for future generations. Dedicated farm areas will serve as a native plant repository, where species are propagated through division, layering, and cuttings.

To start, our nursery will begin by offering deer-resistant perennials and a selection of native plants suited for gardens without deer pressure. As we grow into 2026 and beyond, we’ll expand our offerings—including native plant seeds… or maybe we’ll leave them all for the birds!
